In its final tournament of the season, the girls JV tennis team capped off an undefeated season by winning every match at the annual League tournament held at South.
“We had a great season this year,” said head coach Paula Cornwall.
The team defeated many respected JV tennis programs at the tournament, Kara French’14 said. One of these exciting victories included came over rival Grosse Pointe North.
To keep the undefeated season alive early in the season, crucial wins against Cranbrook-Kingswood, Northville and Detroit Country Day were needed, Cornwall said.
“Those three wins are always pretty tough wins to get,” said Cornwall. “This is the first time we have beaten Northville in three years.”
Outstanding individual efforts from Maggie Flowers and Kelly Beardslee, both ’15, and Madison Skau’13, propelled the team to the Macomb Area Conference (MAC) title, Cornwall said.
“With the help of our standouts, our goals for this year to win our MAC JV division title and to go undefeated by winning the end of the year tournament held at South were achieved,” said Cornwall.
As well as contributions from key players, support throughout the lineup was also a crucial to keep the undefeated season alive, French said.
“Confidence throughout the team really helped us as the season went on, and it really had an effect on the season,” said French. “Every player contributed in some way to help the team this season,” said French. “I feel the group of girls that we had really gave us an edge.”
Maggie Flowers’15 agreed with French.
“Seeing everyone else play with confidence really raised mine this season,” said Flowers.
Support from team mates was also a key factor in acheiving this undefeated season, captain Madison Skau’13 said.
“Everyone was really supportive of one another this year and I think that really helped the girls pull through in our matches,” said Skau.
